Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda Congratulates Resa B. Nelson on Being Named the 2026 Caribbean Rhodes Scholar

During its weekly meeting on Wednesday, the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda extended its warmest and most heartfelt congratulations to Miss Resa B. Nelson on her historic selection as the 2026 Caribbean Rhodes Scholar. “Ms. Nelson’s achievement—emerging as the top candidate among nine finalists from across the Commonwealth Caribbean for one of the world’s most prestigious academic honours—is a source of immense pride not only for her family and community, but for our entire nation,” said the Prime Minister, who chaired the meeting.

At just 21 years old, Resa Nelson has already demonstrated exceptional commitment to research and service. While completing her undergraduate degree in Biology at Hofstra University, she engaged in advanced scientific research, including innovative work on converting Caribbean sargassum seaweed into bio-products, along with other significant projects. She also volunteered her time through mentoring and educational outreach programmes.

“Her selection as a Rhodes Scholar reaffirms our belief in the potential of our young people: with hard work, vision, and a commitment to service, they can excel on the world stage,” Prime Minister Browne noted. “Antigua and Barbuda’s representation in the Rhodes Scholarship programme highlights our nation’s dedication to academic excellence, innovation, and service to humanity.”

The Cabinet encouraged young Antiguans and Barbudans to look to Ms. Nelson’s example—demonstrating that rigorous scholarship, community engagement, and global ambition are within reach for all, regardless of the size of our nation. The Cabinet also expressed appreciation to the educators, mentors, family members, and community supporters who have contributed to her success.

As she embarks on her next chapter, Ms. Nelson—herself a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Scholarship at Hofstra University—will pursue a Master’s by Research in Biology at the University of Oxford. She will join a distinguished network of scholars committed to addressing some of the world’s most urgent scientific and humanitarian challenges.

In celebrating this national milestone, the Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the nation’s emerging scholars, expanding access to world-class educational opportunities, and creating pathways for Antigua and Barbuda to make meaningful contributions to global knowledge and innovation.

“Once again, congratulations to Ms. Nelson. May your journey to Oxford and beyond continue to embody the very best of our nation’s talent, ambition, and spirit.”
