Countries Move to Restrict US Travellers After Expanded American Visa Ban

December 28, 2025
in News, Sport

A growing number of countries are moving to restrict access for American travellers after the United States widened its travel ban and tightened visa rules.

Washington recently expanded visa restrictions to 39 countries, including Antigua and Barbuda and several Caribbean and African states, citing security concerns and immigration overstays. The move has drawn sharp criticism and prompted calls for reciprocal measures.

Niger has taken the strongest action so far, announcing a complete and indefinite ban on visas for US citizens and prohibiting their entry.

The decision marks a significant escalation, despite longstanding US travel advisories warning Americans against visiting the country because of security risks.

Chad has also suspended visas for US nationals after appearing on an earlier US travel ban list. Its president said the measure would remain in place until “equality and mutual respect” in travel policies were restored.

Elsewhere, diplomats from affected countries have warned that further retaliatory steps could follow if US restrictions are not reconsidered.

In the Caribbean, Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica are among the countries facing tighter US rules on business and student visas. Regional leaders say reciprocal action remains under review.

Analysts warn the rise in visa disputes could strain diplomatic relations, disrupt international travel and harm tourism-dependent economies, signalling a shift away from long-standing global travel norms.
