Destin Reflects – Dale Destin Reflects on 30 Years of Weather Forecasting in Antigua and Barbuda
Destin Reflects Years Weather
Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service Director Dale Destin is marking 30 years of weather forecasting and television broadcasts, reflecting on a career spanning 38 years at the service.
In a social media post, Destin traced his journey from the observation desk to leading the organisation, highlighting changes in technology, public communication and the demands of forecasting.
He joined the service as a weather observer in 1988 and became a forecaster in 1996. That same year, he began presenting weather information on ABSTV, starting what has become three decades of broadcast meteorology.
In 2007, Destin expanded his work into climatology, broadening his focus from daily forecasts to understanding the climate and how it is changing. He became director of the service in 2019.
Destin said he was also among the early meteorologists in the region to embrace social media, using the platforms to deliver weather, climate and related information directly to the public.
Reflecting on the milestone, he credited the observers, forecasters, technicians, climatologists and other colleagues who have shared long nights and early mornings at the service.
He recalled hurricanes tracked, warnings issued, forecasts debated and storms that surprised forecasters, alongside technological changes that transformed how the service observes, analyses and communicates weather information.
“It’s about a lifetime of service,” Destin wrote, pointing to generations of Antiguans and Barbudans who have relied on the organisation for information to guide decisions and stay safe.
He said his anniversary comes during another period of transformation, which he described as the “ABMS Meteorological Renaissance.”
The effort, he said, is intended to build a stronger, more modern and resilient Meteorological Service capable of meeting weather, climate and early-warning challenges in the decades ahead.
“Thirty years of forecasting has taught me that the atmosphere never stands still,” Destin wrote. “Neither should a Meteorological Service.”
Destin accompanied the reflection with photographs of himself at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in April 1999 and a more recent image taken Oct. 5, 2026.
