Flash flood warning in effect for Antigua & Barbuda

August 16, 2017
in News

PRESS RELEASE

A flash flood warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas of Antigua and Barbuda is in effect until midnight Wednesday.

This means that moderate to major flooding is occurring or will occur as a result of an active tropical cyclone that is moving over the Leeward Islands causing periodic heavy showers and thunderstorms.

In a statement issued at 2:52 this afternoon, the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Office reported that up to ¾ inch of rain had fallen in some places and an additional 1 to 2 inches was expected in the next eight hours.

Residents in low-lying or flood prone areas are advised to move quickly to higher ground immediately and individuals living along streams, creeks, should take immediate action to protect life and property.

It is also important that residents do not attempt to cross swiftly flowing waters or waters of unknown depth whether by foot or vehicle as just one foot of flowing water could be enough to sweep a car off the road. Persons should also be extremely careful when encountering flooded roads and if in doubt turn around, don’t drown.

The Office will continue to monitor the weather situation and residents are asked to stay tuned to local radio or television for warning updates.
