Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene has urged hotel owners and managers to work more closely with government planners as preparations accelerate for the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
Speaking at a National Task Force meeting on Tuesday, Greene addressed reports that some hotels have made what officials described as unreasonable demands, while others intend to sharply increase room rates during the summit.
He warned that such actions were “unacceptable”, noting that the government is working to attract major international events that ultimately benefit the hospitality sector.
Greene said hotels have a responsibility to support the national effort: “Government is the one attracting thousands of visitors who will fill those rooms.
This is not political; it is a national event. The sector must step up and help make CHOGM a success.”
CHOGM 2026, scheduled for 1–4 November, is expected to bring 5,000–7,000 visitors to Antigua and Barbuda, including heads of government, senior officials and members of several royal families.
The minister also encouraged all sectors, including small businesses, to prepare for the opportunities the event will create. He called on subcommittees to prioritise local vendors and services “as much as possible”, while maintaining international standards.
