Gaston Browne: “Without justice for the Global South, there will be no stability for the world.”The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, hailed a “major diplomatic victory” for Morocco following the adoption of Resolution 2797. He also delivered a powerful indictment of the imbalances of the global system and called for a new international order based on justice, equity, and solidarity.

A world on the brink

The leader also described a planet overwhelmed by an unprecedented succession of crises — geopolitical rivalries and nuclear threats, massive indebtedness, food insecurity… A series of shocks that “threatens the ability of states, large or small, to plan for and protect their populations.”

He denounced a world order that is “fractured, unstable, dominated by competition among great powers,” with “an increasingly blurred line between order and disorder.”For Gaston Browne, one central question emerges:“Will we allow chaos to define the future of humanity, or will we choose a new order based on peace, justice, and unity?”

A reminder of collective responsibility

The Prime Minister called for a global awakening based on cohesion, solidarity, and more inclusive governance. The goal: restoring global balance.

This requires, in his view:

the full and meaningful integration of all countries into financial and trade architectures,

real participation of the Global South in international decision-making,

a renewed multilateralism,

and a balance between national sovereignty and global responsibility.

He insisted on the need to reconcile: competitiveness and cooperation, growth and sustainability, innovation and ethical guarantees, national ambitions and collective vision.

The vulnerabilities of the Global South at the center of concerns

Gaston Browne sounded the alarm about the plight of island states and developing nations. For him, the world will never be stable as long as half of humanity remains fragile. He recalled the initiative launched by his country before international courts to clarify states’ obligations regarding climate change — an initiative that “strengthens the rights of all threatened nations.”

The Caribbean leader criticized an international system that “punishes the vulnerable”:GDP per capita as a criterion for access to financing “is outdated,” middle-income countries are excluded from concessional loans, and global governance is dominated by a small group of actors.

He called for a deep and urgent reform to move from “symbolic inclusion” to real and equal participation.

According to Gaston Browne, the world faces a clear choice:“Either we restore global balance, or we allow instability to reshape the planet.”He urged a collective leap forward to build shared prosperity and fair governance in the service of humanity and the planet
