Government to Present Updated National Building Code to Parliament in Early 2026, Cabinet Says

November 28, 2025
in News

The government will introduce an updated national building code to Parliament in the first quarter of 2026, a reform aimed at modernizing construction standards and improving air quality, ventilation and structural safety across Antigua and Barbuda.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the revised code is part of a wider effort to address aging public infrastructure and workplace health issues identified during ongoing inspections of more than 400 government-owned and government-occupied buildings.

The reform follows Cabinet’s directive for the Ministry of Works, the Development Control Authority and the Department of Analytical Services to intensify inspections and maintenance work after reports of mold, leaks and ventilation failures in several ministries and public offices.

Merchant said the updated code is intended to bring Antigua and Barbuda’s building standards in line with modern expectations, ensuring safer and more functional environments for workers and the public.

The government expects the code to support long-term improvements in resilience, building durability and employee productivity.

Further details on the proposed changes are expected to be released closer to its tabling in Parliament.
