GOVERNOR-GENERAL AND LADY WILLIAMS EXPRESS CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF SIR GERALD WATT, KCN, KC
His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda, and Her Excellency Lady Williams have expressed profound sadness at the passing of Sir Gerald Owen Anderson Watt, KCN, KC, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and a distinguished figure in the legal and political life of the nation.
In extending condolences to the Watt family, Their Excellencies paid tribute to Sir Gerald’s decades of exemplary public service, during which he served with distinction as Attorney General, Parliamentarian, Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission, President of the Antigua and Barbuda Bar Association, and long-serving Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Sir Gerald was widely regarded as a formidable and well-studied legal mind, known for his feisty spirit, strong convictions, and readiness to engage in robust debate. His outspoken nature, combined with deep intellectual rigour, brought courage and clarity to national discussions on law, governance, and constitutional affairs, contributing significantly to the strengthening of Antigua and Barbuda’s democratic institutions.
Whether in Parliament, the courtroom, or the public arena, Sir Gerald commanded respect for his principled stance and unwavering commitment to what he believed served the best interests of the nation. His tenure as Speaker of the House, spanning more than a decade, was marked by passion, rigour, and a deep respect for the responsibilities of the office.
The Governor-General and Lady Williams noted that Sir Gerald’s legacy of public service, intellectual courage, and national dedication will long be remembered, and that his voice and presence will be greatly missed.
