Gov Open Concrete Plant
A new government-owned concrete block-making facility is poised to launch operations in North Sound within the next two to three months, a move to significantly reduce construction costs for subsidized housing and provide relief to the broader public.
Minister Rawdon Turner, Chairman of the National Housing Development and Urban Renewal Company, confirmed the project’s progress following a site inspection conducted this past Thursday.
“The facility, which is currently undergoing final preparations, is expected to be fully operational within 60 to 90 days. During this period, the company will focus on testing and calibrating equipment to ensure production readiness,” he stated.
The plant is designed to serve as a critical component in the government’s efforts to streamline the construction of affordable homes, particularly those under the Home Assistance Programme for the Indigent (HAPI) initiative.
Turner described the investment as a “game-changer,” noting that the current high demand for construction materials in Antigua and Barbuda has frequently led to supply challenges. By bringing block production in-house, the government aims to gain greater control over both the quality and the availability of essential building materials.
Projections from the National Housing Development and Urban Renewal Company suggest that this initiative could reduce the cost of individual blocks by approximately 35%. These savings are expected to lower the overall expenditure for government-subsidized projects, while the facility will also offer the product to the general public at discounted rates.
Beyond its impact on construction costs, the plant is slated to provide a boost to the local labor market. “The facility will require a workforce of approximately 20 to 25 people, including technicians and operators for heavy machinery such as forklifts and wheel loaders. To ensure the facility meets operational standards, external technicians are expected to arrive on the island shortly to commission the equipment and provide specialized training to local staff,” he explained.
If the current timeline holds, the North Sound plant will soon integrate into the government’s broader infrastructure strategy, intended to accelerate the delivery of affordable, concrete-based housing throughout Antigua and Barbuda.
