Gov’t wants visa free access for Chinese, Antiguans

in News

The Cabinet of Antigua & Barbuda has authorized Foreign Affairs Minister Charles Fernandez to seek a visa waiver status agreement between the People’s Republic of China and Antigua and Barbuda.

“The object is to ease travel between the Asian giant and Antigua and Barbuda,” Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst said after cabinet yesterday.

He pointed out that more than 150 students of Antigua and Barbuda nationality now live and study in China; and more than 200 Chinese nationals now make Antigua and Barbuda their home.

“A large number of CIP citizens also come from this Asian state, and others are being encouraged to examine Antigua and Barbuda for investment purposes. China has more millionaires than any other country on earth,” Hurst said.

He also indicated that the IMF has recently undertaken its Article IV examination of the world’s second largest economy, and the world’s most populous country.

“It estimates that China experienced a growth rate of 6.7% in 2016 and that it will continue to grow in excess of 6% each year until 2020. It is scheduled to surpass the USA in less than one decade in the size of its economy,” Hurst said.
