High Surf Advisory Issued for Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Kitts and BVI

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service issued a high surf advisory Saturday morning as hazardous swells move into the northeastern Caribbean, posing risks to Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Kitts and the British Virgin Islands.

Forecasters said waves between 6 and 10 feet are expected to affect northern and eastern coastlines, bringing the potential for rip currents, beach erosion and localized coastal flooding. The advisory classifies the threat as moderate, with the possibility of significant impacts.

The timing of the swells varies across the islands. Barbuda is forecast to see the worst conditions from Saturday afternoon until midnight, while Anguilla will be impacted through the early hours of Sunday. St. Kitts faces high surf Saturday night into midnight, and the British Virgin Islands will be affected from Saturday evening through late Sunday.

Authorities urged residents and visitors to avoid swimming on exposed beaches and to use only lifeguarded or sheltered southern beaches. The service also warned against venturing onto rocks or jetties, noting that strong currents could sweep people away.

“If caught in a rip current, stay calm, float and swim parallel to the shore until free,” the advisory said.

The meteorological service encouraged the public to monitor further updates at antiguamet.com and on its official social media channels.
