Jamilla Kirwan pledges balanced approach as Antigua and Barbuda’s new Independent Senator

in News

Jamilla Kirwan says five decades of personal and professional experience have prepared her for her new role as Antigua and Barbuda’s latest Independent Senator.

Speaking to Observer Media, Kirwan described the appointment as a “significant responsibility” that she approaches with “humility and gratitude”. The media relations specialist, who is marking her 50th year, said life’s challenges have shaped her resilience and empathy—qualities she believes will guide her in the Upper House.

Kirwan, who also serves with the Calvin Ayre Foundation, said her work in community service has helped prepare her, but she views her Senate role as “a higher calling”.

She thanked Governor General Sir Rodney Williams for the appointment and acknowledged the support she has received since her selection.

While she declined to identify her first legislative priority, Kirwan said she intends to focus on youth empowerment, women’s issues and support for vulnerable groups.

She replaces Kiz Johnson, who resigned to seek the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party nomination in St Philip’s South.
