LETTER: Community Policing Must Remain Neutral and Free From Political Influence

November 26, 2025
in News, Sport

Dear Editor,

A flyer recently circulated to the public has raised serious questions about the true nature of a series of town hall meetings on community policing and crime prevention.

Although these meetings are presented as opportunities for residents to engage directly with the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, the flyer prominently features political branding, political colors, and the name and image of political figure Senator Michael Joseph.

This presentation has created confusion and deep concern.

Community policing is a public service.

It is meant to provide a neutral space where every resident feels equally welcomed, equally respected, and equally encouraged to participate.

These meetings are intended to allow citizens to speak openly with law enforcement, express concerns, and work collectively to build safer neighborhoods.

When political imagery is used to promote such events, the purpose becomes blurred and the public is left uncertain about who is truly leading the initiative.

This is not acceptable.

The presence of political branding on a community safety flyer compromises the integrity of the process. It risks giving the impression that policing efforts are being used to promote political interests.

It limits participation from residents who may hesitate to attend an event that appears to be aligned with a specific political party or individual.

Community engagement cannot flourish under those conditions, and public safety suffers when people feel excluded or misled.

This issue requires urgent clarification from the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda.

The public needs a clear, unambiguous answer.

Are these meetings organized by the police as part of their community outreach efforts, or are they political events presented under the guise of community engagement.

The distinction is not minor. It is essential to trust, transparency, and effective policing.

If the meetings are indeed police led, then the flyer is inappropriate and must be corrected without delay.

Official police events must be presented with neutrality and professionalism, not political association.

The community deserves communication that reflects the nonpartisan nature of law enforcement.

If the meetings are political events, then the public should be informed.

People have a right to know whether they are being invited to a community forum or a political gathering.

Transparency is not optional. It is a fundamental requirement for maintaining the confidence of the people.

The goal of community policing is simple. It is to bring everyone together.

It is to strengthen relationships between residents and the police.

It is to create a unified front in the effort to reduce crime and protect our communities.

Political influence, real or perceived, undermines these efforts and divides the very people who need to stand together.

We require clarity, honesty, and responsible communication.

We require a process that respects all residents regardless of political persuasion. We require an environment where policing remains free from political shadow.

Our communities deserve better. The public expects accountability.

This matter must be addressed and corrected so that genuine community engagement can move forward with confidence and integrity.

A Caring Citizen
