LETTER: The Heart of Homeownership: A Call for Fairness in Antigua & Barbuda’s Housing Scheme

November 28, 2025
in News

As a born Antiguan & Barbudan who works tirelessly in the local workforce, doing my best each day to move ahead in life, the government’s housing scheme stood out as a powerful symbol of hope.

It was a commendable initiative designed to give ordinary, hardworking citizens a chance at stability and homeownership in a country where opportunities often feel out of reach.

From the very beginning, one guideline was made clear:

These homes are not to be rented, AT ALL!

They were intended for ownership, not investment. For families, not for income generation. For locals who need stable housing, not for profit-making ventures.

This rule exists for an important reason. It protects the integrity of the program, ensures fairness, and prioritizes residents who live here, work here, pay taxes here, and contribute to the daily life and economic growth of Antigua & Barbuda.

Yet the reality on the ground tells a different story.

It is deeply disheartening that so many Antiguans & Barbudans who are here at home applying, waiting, hoping; are still unable to secure one of these government homes.

Meanwhile, some individuals living overseas have acquired these houses and are renting them out, often to students or short-term occupants, in direct violation of the program’s rules.

This issue is especially visible in the Paynters area, where multiple properties allocated through the housing scheme have reportedly been turned into rental units. For those who are still struggling to find an affordable place to live, this feels not only unfair but also discouraging.

For many of us in the workforce, these homes represent more than just shelter. They represent stability, dignity, and the chance to finally move forward.

So when the opportunity is misused, the entire purpose of the programme is lost and the very people it was designed to help are the ones left struggling the most.
