Opposition MP Richard Lewis has dismissed this year’s Throne Speech as predictable and politically selective, saying it failed to give a balanced account of Antigua and Barbuda’s development over the last two decades.
Speaking after the ceremony, Lewis said the presentation “is [not] much different to what we have come accustomed to,” describing it as the usual overview of the administration’s performance rather than a meaningful assessment of the country’s progress.
He argued that the speech placed heavy emphasis on the period from 2020 to 2025, while overlooking important national achievements credited to the years when the UPP was in office.
According to Lewis, “justice was [not] given to the years 2004 to 2014,” which he said included “significant achievements” that also contributed to Antigua and Barbuda’s advancement.
Lewis said the omission reflects the political nature of Throne Speeches, noting that each administration traditionally highlights its preferred accomplishments.
He added that while the document signals the government’s priorities, a more substantive discussion will take place when Parliament debates the national budget in December.
The MP said he intends to focus on long-standing social and infrastructural issues, including education facilities, water supply, and village roads—areas he believes continue to require urgent attention.
