More Than 11.8 Tonnes of Waste Collected as Nationwide Clean-Up Continues

More than 11.8 tonnes of bulk waste were collected across Antigua and Barbuda last week as a nationwide clean-up campaign continued.

The National Solid Waste Authority (NSWA) has been focusing its efforts in the Yorks area, where dozens of overgrown and abandoned properties have been cleared.

NSWA General Manager Indira James-Henry said crews had cleared 53 vacant lots, uncovering large amounts of hidden waste as vegetation was removed.

“Once you start moving branches and trees, you would be quite surprised by what you find behind,” she said, describing the volume of bulk waste discovered as “alarming”.

She added that 88 abandoned vehicles had so far been removed from the Villa and Yorks areas, with further removals planned. Tree-cutting operations have also been completed along Fort James Drive and surrounding communities.

Crews have extended their work into tourist areas, including Fort James and Runaway, clearing overhanging trees and debris along major routes.

Ms James-Henry said the effort had not only improved the appearance of the areas but had also enhanced public safety.

“It’s a clear path right now. It’s looking quite beautiful, and it’s also adding to the safety of the community,” she said.

Waste collection is next expected to move to the Villa and Point areas.

Officials say the campaign aims to improve the country’s physical environment while reducing health and security risks linked to abandoned vehicles and overgrown land.

Derelict vehicles are marked with an “X” to notify owners and allow time for voluntary removal. If no action is taken, government crews use heavy equipment to remove and dispose of the vehicles.

The government is urging residents to cooperate with the initiative, saying public support is critical to restoring and maintaining community spaces across the country.
