More Weapons and Modern Security Equipment Coming in 2026, PM Says

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the government will significantly increase the firepower and technological capacity of Antigua and Barbuda’s security forces next year as part of a broader push to combat crime and strengthen national security.

Speaking during the 2026 Budget Presentation on Thursday, Browne said law-enforcement agencies will receive new arms, ammunition and advanced security equipment to support both crime-prevention and crime-detection operations.

“Modern security equipment, additional arms and ammunition, I emphasize,” Browne told Parliament, framing the upgrades as essential to keeping pace with increasingly sophisticated criminal networks.

The Prime Minister also announced that the government will procure specialized crime-fighting technology, including targeted surveillance tools designed to improve intelligence gathering and operational response.

“Specialized crime prevention and detection technologies, including targeted surveillance, will be delivered in 2026,” he said.

The expanded investment is part of a wider security package that includes new maritime assets, enhanced radar and communications systems, and more than $4 million committed to training additional police recruits and equipping serving officers.

Browne said these upgrades are necessary to secure borders, intercept traffickers and boost the effectiveness of frontline policing.

Further details on the security allocations are expected during the continuation of the budget debate next week.
