Antigua News Room (ANR) can confirm that MP Asot Michael has been released from London Metropolitan Police custody after spending a few hours under arrest today.
Michael’s attorney James Guthrie confirmed that his client was detained and questioned after arriving at the United Kingdom’s London Gatwick Airport via British Airways 2256 at 10:10 AM this morning.
It has not been made clear if Michael was unconditionally released or if he is being barred from travelling.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who is away on government business, revoked Michael’s appointment as Minister of Tourism, Investment and Energy earlier today. An emergency Cabinet meeting lead by Acting Prime Minister Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin was called in reaction to the news of Michael’s arrest.
There has also been no official word on the reason for Michael’s arrest though there are suggestions that it is in connection to UK investor Peter Virdee, who himself was arrested for tax evasion in January.
The government is expected to make a subsequent statement.
