New €1.1M Dredging Excavator Arrives to Strengthen Antigua’s Port Operations

December 3, 2025
in News

A €1.1 million Caterpillar excavator arrived in Antigua late Tuesday, delivering a major boost to the government’s dredging efforts at two of the country’s most critical port sites.

The machine, weighing up to 100 tonnes without attachments, drew immediate attention from veteran operators at the Deep Water Harbour.

Crane operator Lynn Walt “Crusher” Spencer, who has worked at the port for nearly five decades, said he has never seen equipment of this scale arrive on island.

He Said the new excavator is the “right thing” for clearing channels and tackling heavy marine work.

The government hopes the machine’s size and power will finally break through the hard rock formations that have delayed dredging in St. John’s Harbour and at the Crabbes Peninsula—both vital to tourism expansion and the country’s LNG ambitions.

At St. John’s Harbour, officials expect the upgraded capacity will help revive plans to berth Oasis-class cruise ships, increasing passenger traffic and spending during peak season.

At Crabbes Peninsula, the excavator is expected to advance preparations for LNG-capable ships, a key step toward turning Antigua into a regional distribution point and reducing energy costs.

Spencer said the new unit dwarfs other excavators currently in Antigua, comparing them to toys beside the newly arrived machine.

He described it as larger than any track crane or cherry picker on island and well-suited for heavy-duty dredging and construction work.
