A 33-year-old man has pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm magazine after police discovered a 30-round 9mm magazine concealed inside a wireless party speaker that he had just collected from a shipping agency.
Alex Joseph of Nut Grove was intercepted by police along Simon Bolivar Boulevard in the St Johnston’s Village area at approximately 4:50 p.m. on February 27, during a stop-and-search operation carried out by officers from several specialised units, including the Criminal Investigations Department Task Force, the Special Services Unit, the Firearms and Evidence Recovery Unit, the Serious Crime Unit, the K-9 Unit, and the Police Armoury.
According to the police, Joseph went to a shipping agency, collected a brown paper box, and departed in a vehicle. Officers stopped him shortly afterward, telling him they suspected he was in possession of illegal items and requesting to search him.
Inside the box was a wireless party speaker. An officer’s suspicion was aroused by the item, and upon removing the screws from the housing, discovered a 30-round 9mm Pro Mag magazine wrapped in multiple layers of paper that was hidden within the interior.
Joseph, represented by attorney Lawrence Daniel, entered a guilty plea when he appeared before the court yesterday.
He has been remanded to His Majesty’s Prison and is scheduled to return to court on Thursday for sentencing.
