The government has launched the Plant2Plate Antigua and Barbuda Initiative, aimed at increasing local food production and improving national food security.
The programme was announced by Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Barbuda Affairs, Hon. Anthony Smith Jr., alongside the return of the Backyard Gardening Competition.
Mr Smith said the initiative encourages households to embrace gardening as a practical way to contribute to food security, noting that even small backyard efforts can make a national difference.
This year’s competition carries the theme “Homegrown today, food secure tomorrow”, underscoring the importance of locally grown food in building long-term resilience.
A new feature of the initiative is the “Cook What You Grow” Culinary Showcase, which will highlight meals prepared using produce grown by participants in their own gardens.
According to the minister, the culinary component is designed to celebrate local produce while promoting healthier, farm-to-table eating habits.
The Plant2Plate initiative is part of broader government efforts to reduce reliance on food imports and strengthen resilience in the face of global supply challenges.
Residents are being encouraged to take part by planting at home, entering the competition and showcasing their harvests as the country works towards greater food security.
