PM Browne Defends Antigua and Barbuda’s Role in CARICOM, Urges Regional Unity

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has defended Antigua and Barbuda’s role within the Caribbean Community, saying the country remains committed to regional solidarity and cooperation despite differences among member states.

In his 2026 New Year’s Address, Browne acknowledged that disagreements and divergent policy choices sometimes emerge within CARICOM, but said Antigua and Barbuda respects the sovereign right of each member state to act in its own perceived interest.

“At times, voices may differ within our Caribbean family. Choices may be made by others that we do not share,” Browne said. “However, we respect those choices—just as we have always respected the sovereign right of every CARICOM member, to act in its own perceived interest.”

The prime minister said Antigua and Barbuda has consistently contributed to the region’s development through trade, cooperation, advocacy and shared sacrifice, stressing that such contributions are rooted in principle rather than obligation.

“It must also be said—calmly and truthfully—that Antigua and Barbuda has consistently contributed, through trade, cooperation, advocacy and shared sacrifice, to the economic and social benefits enjoyed across our Community,” Browne said. “We do so not out of weakness, but out of principle and solidarity.”

Browne emphasized that regional unity remains essential for small states facing shared global challenges, even when tensions or misunderstandings arise within the bloc.

Quoting Jamaican nationalist leader Marcus Garvey, Browne reminded the region that “a people without unity are a people easily defeated,” underscoring his view that cohesion strengthens the Caribbean’s collective voice on the international stage.

Despite moments of strain, Browne said Antigua and Barbuda remains steadfast in its commitment to CARICOM, adding that small states are strongest when they stand together with dignity, reason and mutual respect.

He said the government continues to view regional cooperation as a cornerstone of national and regional resilience, particularly in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
