The National Coalition of Neighbourhood Watches (NCNW) has come out in condemnation of Friday night’s drive-by shooting in Cedar Grove which left a 20-year-old woman dead.
Xavier Thomas was shot in the stomach when gunmen in a car opened fire on individuals in the area before speeding from the scene.
Thomas was taken to the hospital but efforts to save her life failed.
Lawn “TI” Nicholas, 49, and Shane Matthew, 32, were also injured during the ordeal.
The NCNW cited a significant rise in violent crime and the apparent proliferation of illegal firearms in Antigua and Barbuda, adding that it is saddened by the senseless loss of life.
“[We] are deeply concerned about the recent spate of gun violence some of which have caused the loss of life,” the NCNW said.
The group also recounted statements made by Commissioner of Police Wendel Robinson about the adoption of a zero-tolerance stance toward gang-related violence, noting that he is yet to reveal what specific measures are being adopted so residents can be assured that the violent crime spree will “soon cease”.
“We encourage him to do so (indicate what specific crime-fighting initiatives will be taken),” the NCNW noted, while adding that it supports the efforts of the police to control and reduce crime.
Police have called on residents, especially those living in Nut Grove, Cedar Grove and Darkwood, who have witnessed criminal activity, to assist the police with their investigations in order to solve crime.
