Police to Expand Road-Safety Media Campaign With New ABS Programming, Cabinet Says

November 28, 2025
in News

The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda will broaden its public education campaign on road safety, with the Police Commissioner set to engage ABS Television to develop new programming aimed at curbing reckless driving, officials said Thursday.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the Commissioner intends to work with ABS and other media houses to mount a more intensive awareness effort as the country grapples with rising collisions and late-night fatal crashes.

“The Commissioner mentioned… he will be making contact very soon with the management at ABS Television to look at ways that programs can be developed,” Merchant said during the post-Cabinet briefing.

The expanded campaign is part of a broader push to slow traffic, reduce distraction-related crashes and encourage motorists to intervene when they see dangerous driving in their own communities.

Merchant said the police believe education must work alongside stepped-up enforcement, including nighttime stops and increased visibility in high-risk areas.

The enhanced media outreach comes as Cabinet expresses concern over eight road fatalities recorded so far this year and data showing more than 1,300 collisions between June 2024 and June 2025.

Police are also awaiting additional radar guns to support speed enforcement, with several existing units currently out of service.

Officials said the expanded media programming is expected to launch once coordination with ABS is finalized.
