Pringle Says UPP Would Move Quickly to Repair U.S. Relations

January 1, 2026
in News, Sport

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle says a future United Progressive Party administration would move swiftly to repair Antigua and Barbuda’s relationship with the United States, citing ongoing visa restrictions and the risk of further economic fallout.

In his 2026 New Year’s message, Pringle said Antiguans and Barbudans hoping to obtain certain categories of U.S. visas have found those avenues closed at the start of the year.

“As of today, January 1, nationals who had had hopes of acquiring certain classes of visa in this new year will be unable to do so,” Pringle said. “Unless you are already in possession of a valid visa, you will not be granted one in the foreseeable future.”

He said the situation remains unchanged despite public assurances that diplomatic engagement would resolve the issue.

“Despite the prime minister’s assurances that diplomatic negotiations would reopen those doors … the situation has not changed,” Pringle said.

Pringle said a United Progressive Party administration would immediately pursue diplomatic engagement with Washington.

“A new United Progressive Party Administration will employ all strategic avenues, and our reputation for good relations with the United States Government, to resolve this matter in the shortest time possible,” he said.

He said the objective would be to prevent additional measures that could harm citizens and the wider economy.

“We will work in your interest to avoid any further restrictions or sanctions that could disrupt our economy and the stability of our country,” Pringle said.
