Private Letter to a Friend

Private Letter to a Friend
Dear Harold,
I’m writing to you as a friend who doesn’t want to see you embarrassed or hurt unnecessarily.
Politics is unforgiving, and right now the reality on the ground is not matching the public messaging being put out. The media commentary, community conversations, and overall optics suggest a gap between effort and genuine support. Momentum and sentiment matter, and at this stage they do not appear to be moving in your favor.
I’ve also seen the articles and commentary circulating, and while I know media narratives can be unfair, some of the criticism has stuck because it reflects what people are already questioning. Past constituency activities associated with

Barbara Coates that failed to gain traction are being revisited, and that history is not helping the present effort.
There are also growing concerns about recent public claims, the portrayal of your return as a “resounding welcome,” the promotion of a successful youth engagement based on limited participation, and the health fair critics say relied on bringing in people from outside the constituency, many from Old Road to be specific. Regardless of intent, these are being described as deceptive, and that perception is damaging.
In All Saints West, the sentiment being expressed is not enthusiasm. There is resistance and fatigue. At the same time, Anthony Smith Jr.’s support in the area is strong, visible, and organic. Smith was fixing roads with personal resources and the help of some from the private sector in opposition, and he continues to work harder now in government for the people. People speak of him with confidence, and that reality cannot be ignored. Not to speak negatively of your age, but Smith is a young man with vigor, now peaking as you close in your twilight years.
Harold, I’m saying this privately because I care. Continuing in this race risks public embarrassment that could overshadow your past contributions. Stepping aside now would not be a failure, it would be a dignified decision that protects your legacy and personal peace. As you said in your last resignation interview, one should know when to hold-out, when to fold-out and definitely when to walk away.
Whatever you decide, I hope you know this comes from honesty and respect, not criticism.
Sincerely,

UPP forever!
