Rotary Club of Antigua Donates Over $40,000 in Lifesaving Equipment to Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre

The Rotary Club of Antigua (RCA) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare in Antigua and Barbuda, donating more than $40,000 XCD to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) for the purchase of Bubble CPAP machines and pulse oximeters for the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

The donation, made during an official visit by Rotary District 7030 Governor Soraya Warner-Gustave, reflects RCA’s ongoing partnership with SLBMC and its dedication to supporting initiatives that directly improve patient care and outcomes.

The newly acquired Bubble CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines are vital tools in the care of premature and critically ill newborns, helping them breathe more easily without the need for invasive mechanical ventilation. This technology aligns with international NICU care standards and allows physicians to provide gentler, non-invasive respiratory support—a key step in reducing complications and improving survival rates among preterm infants.

The donation also funded several pulse oximeters, essential devices that monitor oxygen levels in newborns. Having additional units readily available allows the NICU team to provide faster, safer, and more efficient monitoring for every baby under their care.

“This donation represents more than equipment—it’s an investment in the future of our children,” said Michael Spencer, Past President of the Rotary Club of Antigua, who led the initiative during his presidency. “We’re proud to support Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre in their mission to deliver high-quality neonatal care, and to help ensure that even the tiniest patients receive the best possible start in life.”

SLBMC’s Medical Director, Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis, expressed deep gratitude for the contribution and highlighted its impact on patient care.

“The Rotary Club’s support continues to transform what’s possible for our patients,” said Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis, SLBMC Medical Director. “Our goal is always to give every child the best possible start in life, and we value the partnership of all who help us achieve it. These Bubble CPAP machines and pulse oximeters have already made a tangible difference in the care we provide. Countless babies, and the families who love them, are benefiting from this investment. We are truly grateful for Rotary’s continued partnership.”

Elisa Graham, current President of the Rotary Club of Antigua, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to improving community health and well-being.

“Supporting the hospital and, by extension, the health of our nation, is something we take great pride in,” said Graham. “Our work is only possible because of the generosity of our members and the community, who believe in Rotary’s mission of service above self. We thank everyone who helps make these initiatives a reality.”

Beyond the CPAP machines and pulse oximeters, additional equipment will be procured through this donation to further strengthen neonatal care at SLBMC.
