Schools expected to open on Monday

September 2, 2017
in News

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is advising parents to monitor the path of Hurricane Irma as the storm continues its path in the Atlantic.

Schools are expected to open on Monday, and it was projected that the island may be impacted by the system then or Tuesday if it moves closer to the Lesser Antilles.

The ministry said it is closely monitoringIrma’s movement and will continue to dialogue with the Met Office and the Office of Disaster Management to keep parents and all stakeholders updated on the reopening of school.

“…(we) will keep the public updated if a decision is taken to delay the reopening (of) all public educational institutions if Irma continues to strengthen and if the hurricane moves closer towards the Lesser Antilles.”

However, the ministry is advising that the necessary precautions be taken in case the hurricane makes landfall here.

“As a precaution, all educators attached to public education institutions, parents, stakeholders, shelter managers, and all others concerned are advised to make preparations in the event Hurricane Irma strikes!

“Colleges, schools, and offices are strongly advised to make all necessary preparations for any eventuality, including securing premises, information and other property! Considering the fluid nature of the development all are asked to make preparations for any eventuality,” the ministry outlined in a statement.

Parents and other stakeholders will be provided with an update over the next 48 hours, as the ministry is cognizant that several schools are designated hurricane shelters.
