The government’s second Seven Seas desalination plant is set to come on stream this weekend, adding roughly two million gallons of water per day to the national supply network.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant confirmed that the new facility will begin production within days as part of ongoing efforts to improve water access across the island.
“The plant will go into production this coming weekend and will produce approximately two million gallons of water per day,” Merchant said during Thursday’s post-Cabinet media briefing.
He noted that residents in northern communities such as Hodges Bay, Coolidge, New Winthorpes, Barnes Hill, Blue Waters, and Cedar Valley are expected to benefit from the increased output.
However, he cautioned that improvements may not be immediately noticeable, as testing and system adjustments will take place once operations begin.
The new desalination plant is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen water reliability, particularly in drought-prone areas, and forms part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades managed by the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA).
