Senior Police Officer Reassigned to New Security Role Amid Ongoing Vehiclegate Scandal

A senior police officer linked to the “Vehiclegate” scandal has been reassigned to a new post within the Ministry of Legal Affairs, Public Safety, Immigration and Labour, according to Cabinet documents.

Cabinet approved the creation of the Officer-in-Charge of Surveillance and Security position during its 22 October meeting, retroactive to 20 October. The Assistant Commissioner of Police was recommended for secondment to the post, which carries the same pay as his police rank.

The role involves overseeing government-wide security operations, including surveillance, access control, emergency response, and the protection of infrastructure and sensitive data.

The reassignment comes amid continuing fallout from the unauthorised vehicle procurement scheme at the Ministry of Public Works, where spending is estimated to have exceeded $15 million. The scandal has already led to dismissals and resignations, including Senator Clement Antonio’s removal from Public Works and the Comptroller of Customs’ resignation.

Opposition members continue to press for an independent investigation, while Prime Minister Gaston Browne maintains that the focus should remain on recovering funds from implicated dealerships.
