Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre has launched an urgent public appeal for O-negative blood donors as supplies of the universal donor type reach critically low levels.
In a notice released by the hospital’s blood bank, members of the public with O-negative blood are being urged to donate as soon as possible to support ongoing emergency care and surgical procedures. O-negative blood is often in highest demand because it can be safely used for patients of any blood type, particularly in life-threatening situations where there is no time for cross-matching.
The blood bank, located at the medical centre, is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00 to accommodate donors.
Hospital officials are encouraging eligible residents to respond promptly, stressing that timely donations can help save lives.
