‘Small but Substantial’: PM Says Antigua and Barbuda Punches Above Its Weight on Global Stage

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says Antigua and Barbuda’s growing role in international affairs proves that small states can be powerful voices for justice, equality, and climate resilience.

In his Independence Day address, Browne said the country’s achievements — from hosting major global conferences to topping regional development rankings — demonstrate that its influence extends far beyond its size.

“Antigua and Barbuda now ranks number one in the Caribbean on the United Nations Human Development Index,” Browne said. “This is an extraordinary achievement — proof that size does not determine significance, and that small states, when well governed, can be global models.”

He described the twin-island nation as “small, but substantial; modest in geography, but consequential in influence,” adding that its leadership continues to be recognized across the world.

Browne pointed to Antigua and Barbuda’s recent track record of hosting international gatherings — including the UN SIDS4 Conference in 2024, the Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly in 2025, and the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2026.

“These milestones are votes of confidence in our capacity to deliver,” Browne said. “Our voice is heard and respected because we stand on the principles of love, truth, and justice, and we speak with principle, purpose, and passion.”

The Prime Minister said the country continues to advocate for reform of the international financial system, fair treatment of small island developing states, and stronger global action on climate change.

“Our global standing is not a gift,” Browne said. “It is the earned respect of a country determined to stand up for principle and for justice — not only for ourselves, but for all those who are threatened or disadvantaged.”
