Solid Waste Authority Increasing Cleanup Crews as Demand Grows, Cabinet Says

The Solid Waste Management Authority is expanding its street and drain-cleaning crews to keep pace with rising national cleanup demands, Cabinet officials said Thursday.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the increase in staffing comes as recent heavy rains have triggered rapid overgrowth along roadsides and drains, adding to the workload already created by widespread illegal dumping and repeated bulk-waste accumulation.

He said additional workers are being contracted to ensure cleanup teams can respond more quickly and maintain heavily affected areas.

According to Merchant, the authority is also restructuring its bulk-waste operations, including the rezoning of collection areas, after crews reported returning to cleared sites only to find new piles of waste forming days later.

The increased manpower is expected to help stabilize the cleanup schedule as the country continues its national beautification push.

The expansion of street and drain-cleaning crews forms part of a broader set of measures aimed at restoring public spaces and supporting environmental management across the island.

Cabinet said the effort will continue alongside the derelict-vehicle removal programme, which has seen increased public uptake.
