Plans are under way for an extensive clean-up in St John’s, as the National Solid Waste Authority (NSWA) moves its operations closer to the city.
Work was completed in Yorks over the weekend, with teams now progressing through the Villa and Point communities. As the collection continues, increased attention will be given to St John’s.
The NSWA says the initiative will include deep cleaning, power washing and disinfecting in collaboration with the Central Board of Health.
General Manager of the NSWA, Indira James Henry, said crews will clean gutters, wash sidewalks and disinfect public areas, similar to preparations carried out during the Carnival season.
She explained that the clean-up will cover the city centre, stretching from Dickenson Bay Street to Independence Drive and down Vivian Richards Street.
Ms James Henry said the operation will focus on areas with persistent sanitation concerns, including locations affected by vagrancy and public urination.
The programme is aimed at improving the appearance of Antigua and Barbuda while reducing health and security risks.
The clean-up drive is expected to continue in other communities as the initiative is expanded in the coming weeks.
