UN youth advisory group member calls for regional unity as second tenure begins

Antiguan Youth Ambassador Shaquan O’Neil is beginning his second tenure on the United Nations (UN) Youth Advisory Group with a sharp focus on dismantling “individualism” in Caribbean advocacy.

O’Neil, who was recently reappointed to the regional body, argues that the Caribbean’s habit of working in silos is hindering real progress on shared issues.

While a second term on a UN body is a high honor, for O’Neil, the weight of the appointment is deeply personal. He described the reappointment as “everything” to him—not for the prestige, but for the chance to be the mentor he wished he had when he first started.

“It means everything to me, and not just because it’s another accomplishment,” O’Neil shared. He explained that his primary goal is to help younger members navigate the same hurdles he faced during his first tenure, ensuring that no one has to struggle through the process alone.

Reflecting on his experience, he noted that many regional projects are often duplicated across different islands, diluting their potential impact. He believes the priority for his second tenure must be the integration of these efforts.

“I strongly believe that we all share the same issues within the Caribbean… and we have to really prioritize collaboration and kick out the whole aspect of individualism,” O’Neil stated. “Many times there are too many projects that are the same that we can work on collectively and make a greater impact.”

O’Neil is also pushing for a shift in how young leaders view global organizations. He pointed out that UN agencies in the region offer more than just a platform for dialogue; they provide the financial tools necessary for community development.

“It’s not only just a talk shop, but it’s an opportunity for you to execute projects by accessing grants,” he explained. He believes his role is to give young people the “necessary tools” to unlock these opportunities within their own households, schools, and communities.

Perhaps the most emotional part of O’Neil’s message was directed at those currently facing criticism or feeling like giving up. He urged young leaders to block out the noise and remember the original spark that started their journey.

“There’s many times you’d feel like giving up, there’s many times you face critics… but remember why you started,” he said. “Remember that you’re not here merely to make a living, but to enrich the world with a greater purpose and vision, and once you remember that, the opportunity will come naturally.”

He concluded by stressing that the future of the Caribbean depends on a shift in mindset—moving beyond the rhetoric of unity to actual, coordinated action. “We have to ensure that going forward we act and move like one Caribbean and not just saying it, but acting like it, because that is the only way we can really bring real change.”
