VIDEO: Housing minister Launches “The St. George” A low Income home starting at EC$117,000

New EC$117,000 ‘St. George’ home offers modular growth and climate-resilient design

Housing Minister Maria Bird-Browne has introduced The St. George, a new EC$117,000 CHAPA home model she says is built for long-term family growth and designed to withstand modern climate challenges.

During her parliamentary presentation, the minister said CHAPA created the new model for people who “do not meet the 150 threshold” but still need a secure home “to put a roof over the heads of their children.” She said the home will “allow for many individuals… to own a home.”

“The St. George” is the second of two new ultra-low-income units launched during the Budget Debate. “There’s a second model… that we’re proud to launch today, and that is called the St. George,” she said. “Launched today, it’s called the St. George, and it comes in at $117,000.”

The home features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and what Bird-Browne described as a “very beautiful, modern” layout. She noted it is DCA-approved, climate resilient, wind-tunnel tested, and built with “heavy steel… tied in from top to bottom,” making it earthquake resistant.

The minister emphasised the home’s modular design:
“You’re looking at a home that can be passed on from generation to generation.”
“You’re looking at a home as well that can be added to… It is modular… and as the family grows, so too the home can grow.”

Bird-Browne said the St. George reflects this year’s budget theme of “People-Centered Growth and Development,” adding: “And if this is not it, I don’t know what else is.”

The model is available immediately to individuals with pre-approvals below $120,000.
