PM Browne Says New Polling in Eight Constituencies Shows ‘Significant Swing’ Toward ABLP

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says fresh political polling across eight constituencies indicates a “significant swing” toward the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) and a marked loss of support for the United Progressive Party (UPP).

Browne said the findings were based on surveys conducted by pollster Peter Wickham in constituencies the ABLP narrowly lost in the last election, with Barbuda being the only exception.

According to the Prime Minister, the data point to a consolidation of support that places the governing party in a stronger position heading into the next general election.

He said the numbers reveal “empirical evidence” that voters are shifting back toward the ABLP, and warned that the UPP could face “a serious trashing” if current trends continue.

Browne also linked the polling results to the outcome of the recent St. Philip’s South primary, saying the surveys had already identified Kiz Johnson as the favoured candidate among constituents even before her landslide win.

He said the polls validated the primary result and confirmed Johnson’s strong standing in the community.

The Prime Minister described Johnson as a “bright young lady” and a potential first female representative for the constituency, noting that her emergence aligns with the party’s push for greater youth and gender representation in leadership.

Browne added that the administration is continuing efforts to promote women across government, pointing to the recent appointments of two female ambassadors. At the same time, he said the party remains committed to supporting long-serving members who still have the “capacity to continue to serve.”
