Police Launch Operation Restore
The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda (RPFAB) has launched a new coordinated crime-fighting exercise called “Operation Restore Confidence” across the country.
Police said the operation involves intelligence-led activities carried out in various communities and known crime hotspots. These include search warrants, mobile patrols, vehicle checkpoints and stop-and-search exercises targeting illegal firearms, ammunition, drugs, stolen property and persons of interest in ongoing investigations.
During one major operation carried out in the early hours of Sunday, August 16th, police seized an Astra CUB .25 calibre pistol along with several rounds of matching ammunition.
Police also seized several licence plates, suspected to be stolen, along with other items of interest. As a result, several people were detained for questioning.
The operation involved several police departments and specialist units, including the Criminal Investigations Department Task Force, the K-9 Unit, the Narcotics Department, the Special Services Unit, A and B Divisions, the Proceeds of Crime Unit, the Forensic Evidence Recovery Unit and the Traffic Department.
Police said “Operation Restore Confidence” is not a one-off exercise and similar operations will continue across the country to disrupt criminal networks, remove illegal firearms from the streets and improve community safety.
Members of the public are being asked to share information on illegal firearms, stolen property or other criminal activity.
Anyone with information can contact the Criminal Investigations Department at 462-3913 or 462-3914, or Crimestoppers at 800-TIPS (8477). All information will be treated confidentially.
