On the 36th anniversary of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), its Director General is lamenting the issues relating to the provision of reliable internet services.
In a message to mark the anniversary Dr. Didacus Jules “many frustrations” are experienced on a daily basis with mobile and broadband.
Dr. Jules said in today’s global economy, these information technologies are the backbone of the digital economy.
“They are no longer luxuries but necessities for survival and progress,” he said.
In many advanced countries, access to quality internet service is now deemed a human right,” Dr. Jules exclaimed.
The OECS has been working with the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (ECTEL) to strengthen the regulatory authority.
The OECS boss says he wants “to ensure that roaming is removed between the OECS Member States.”
He also wants number portability “or the right to keep your number as a personal number no matter which provider you switch to.”
And Dr. Jules is not in favour of providers to charge extra to use services such as Skype, WhatsApp, or any over the top services that enable people to make free internet calls.
He said in his message that these measures will help people communicate easily with family and friends overseas and reduces a business’ communications cost.
