Antigua and Barbuda’s radiology services are making “solid progress” toward more digital and efficient systems, according to Dr Destine Reid, senior radiology official at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, following a recent visit to Vienna.

Dr Reid attended a week-long coordination meeting hosted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which focused on diagnostic radiography and brought together representatives from around 10 Caribbean countries.
When asked how Antigua and Barbuda’s radiological services compared to international standards, Dr Reid said the country’s imaging services are “moving in the right direction,” particularly in the area of digital imaging, while noting that there is still room for further improvement.
She said that significant strides have already been made, with key systems now fully digital, including X-ray and mammography services.
“We have a working PACS system that allows for tele-radiography or remote reporting, so a doctor or radiologist can be off island and still review images and provide reports,” she said.
Dr Reid added that the system also allows for networking and consultation with external specialists, improving access to expertise and supporting clinical decision-making.
The IAEA-led meeting also focused on strengthening diagnostic imaging services across the Caribbean through improved training, quality assurance systems, and coordinated regional development of radiology services aimed at improving patient care and diagnostic accuracy.
