Antiguan Communications Consultant Amplifies Voices of Small Island Nations at COP30 in Brazil

Antiguan and Barbudan Communications Consultant, Andy Liburd, is among those contributing to the global fight for climate justice at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) now underway in Belém, Brazil.

Mr. Liburd serves as a member of the Media and Communications Team supporting the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) — a coalition that represents the interests of 39 small island and low-lying coastal nations most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. In this role, he is responsible for helping to ensure that the perspectives, challenges, and solutions of island nations are effectively communicated and amplified throughout the high-level discussions taking place at COP30.

Mr. Liburd delivered a presentation to AOSIS negotiators, underscoring the critical importance of strategic communication in advancing the priorities of small island states. His presentation outlined a comprehensive approach to positioning SIDS at the center of global climate conversations, focusing on the 1.5°C climate goal, the need for climate finance, and the protection of oceans, forests, and biodiversity.

A familiar face at the annual climate summits, Mr. Liburd has become a permanent fixture at COP over the past several years. He credits his continued involvement to the Antigua and Barbuda Mission to the United Nations, led by Ambassador Walton Webson, and to AOSIS Communications Lead, Bianca Beddoe, for recognizing his commitment and expertise in advancing the cause of small island developing states.

“It honestly makes me feel proud, despite the pressing challenges, that our country can continue to play a role in ensuring the urgent concerns of island nations remain at the forefront of climate action negotiations,” Mr. Liburd stated. “It is truly rewarding and satisfying that I can play a part in such a noble endeavour.”

Through his ongoing work with AOSIS, Mr. Liburd continues to reinforce Antigua and Barbuda’s leadership in international climate diplomacy, ensuring that the voices of small island nations remain strong, visible, and impossible to ignore.
