Caribbean Cinemas has closed its Antigua location until further notice, following health breaches that previously led to the closure of its concession stands.
The cinema announced the full closure in an online notice to customers, saying it was working to improve the facility.
“As we work to better our cinema we will be closed until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience this may bring and appreciate your understanding,” the notice read.
The move follows health enforcement action over food safety and sanitation breaches at the cinema’s concession stands.
The earlier concerns centred on conditions at the concessions, with health officials requiring corrective measures before they could reopen. However, the operators reopened the food stands on Sunday without taking the required action, prompting officials from the Central Board of Health (CBH), accompanied by police, to visit the establishment and order the stands closed.
Health officials removed bags of popcorn, nachos and other snacks.
The full closure has prompted mixed reactions from members of the public, with some calling for improvements beyond the food concessions.
One person said: “Everyone worried about the food alone the seats need to be sanitised properly.”
Another called for improvements to several parts of the cinema, saying: “Fix the arcade, its garbage… everything out a order…Put them in order plz.”
There were also calls for more food choices, better seating and improvements to the overall movie experience.
Another person welcomed the prospect of changes, saying: “Thank you. Looking forward to seeing more options other than popcorn and hot dogs etc. More staff, a better seating arrangement and a better viewing of the movies.”
Others raised concerns about prices and the cinema’s policy against outside food, including food purchased elsewhere in the same complex.
