Team Antigua and Barbuda wrapped up their participation in this year’s World Athletics Under-20 Championships held in Eugene, Oregan, on Saturday with a historic appearance in the girls 200 meters final by young sprint sensation, Tyra Fenton.
“Fenton’s appearance in the final marked the first time a female athlete from Antigua and Barbuda competed in a final at the event.”
The Roots Athletic Club athlete and St Anthony’s Secondary School (SASS) student, had previously registered a time of 23.15 seconds in the semifinals that propelled her into the final.
Fenton however, clocked 23.52 seconds to finish ninth in the final. The race was won by the USA’s Mia Maxwell in a personal best time of 22.37 seconds while Shanoya Douglas of Jamaica won silver in 22.68 seconds and Maria Maxwell of USA captured bronze in 22.77 seconds.
Also over the weekend, men’s sprinter, Kasiya Daley, clocked 21.23 to finish eighth in his 200 meters heat. The time was not good enough to push the Antiguan into the final. The team is expected to return home this week.
On Friday, Kettia Ambrose bowed out of the Girls 400 meters event after finishing sixth in her semifinal heat at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium. Ambrose clocked 54.82 seconds in her bid to get to the final. The team is expected to return home this week.
