Grenades Keep Title Hopes

Grenades FC kept their Antigua Premier League (APL) championship hopes alive with a 4-0 win over relegation-threatened Attacking Saints, when they met in the feature game of a double-header at the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) Technical Center on Saturday.

The win was their 16th in 19 outings as they move to 50 points and second on the standings to defending champions All Saints United.

There were four different scorers in the match for Grenades with Troy Jules putting them ahead in the 18th minute. Barrington Blake increased the Jennings men’s advantage with a 33rd minute close range effort. Jahdante Griffith got in on the action in the 55th minute before Stanley Province rounded off the scoring in minute 75.

The loss leaves Attacking Saints on 23 points and just outside the four-team relegation zone.

In the opening fixture, former champions Old Road FC mauled the already relegated Jennings United 14-0 to improve their chances of a top five finish.

Rakeem Joseph recorded a triple-hattrick plus one, as beat the Jennings United’s Khuwan Stevens 10 times in goal to help lift Old Road to the crushing win. Joseph netted in minutes 19, 36, 51, 57, 59, 63, 80, 83 and 85 as they took advantage of the hopeless Jennings squad.

Shackwon Simon also had a good day, striking in minutes 16 and 35 to record a brace while Rodney Lawrence and Obediah Browne scored in minutes 26 and 74 respectively.

Meanwhile, Greenbay Hoppers collected three points and three goals after FC Master Ballers could not field a team for their First Division encounter scheduled for the Radio Range playing field on Saturday.
