Historic Opening – Historic Opening – The former Deluxe Cinema has been transformed into an approximately 850-seat cultural venue ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Antigua and Barbuda opened a new chapter in its cultural development on Friday, October 23, with the official opening of the National Performing Arts Centre in St. John’s.

The transformation of the former Deluxe Cinema has given the country’s musicians, dancers, actors, writers and other creatives a dedicated national venue to develop and showcase their talents.

Government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, cultural practitioners, students and other guests attended the ceremony, which included a blessing, ribbon-cutting, plaque unveiling and performances demonstrating the range of talent the centre is intended to support.

The approximately 850-seat facility features modern lighting, sound and audiovisual equipment. Minister for Sports and the Creative Industries Dwayne George placed its value at approximately $25 million.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne described the opening as a major investment in cultural preservation, youth development and the creative economy.

He said the government’s ambition extends beyond providing a stage, with adjoining properties intended to accommodate training and studio facilities to help artists develop their skills and build careers.

Minister for Social and Urban Transformation Rawdon Turner, who led the transformation as chairman of National Housing, credited workers and contractors with overcoming substantial challenges to complete the project.

Minister for Housing and Works Maria Browne said the centre demonstrated the importance of providing infrastructure for cultural development, while Governor General’s Deputy Sir Clare Roberts urged the public to embrace and protect the institution as a national inheritance.

The opening programme featured the Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Inspire Choir, the National Youth Theatre, the Antigua Dance Academy and other performers.

A theatrical presentation by the National Youth Theatre reflected on the difficulties performers have faced without a permanent home and celebrated the opportunities the new centre provides.

The venue is also preparing for an immediate international assignment: hosting the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting on November 3.

Officials nevertheless stressed that its lasting importance will be measured by the opportunities it creates for Antiguans and Barbudans long after the Commonwealth gathering.

This is a great step for Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural and creative industry even outside of CHOGM. Having a national venue for our performers and artists creates more opportunities to showcase local talent and preserve our culture for future generations.
