Hit Run Driver Fined
A man who previously pleaded guilty to offences arising from a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured national cyclist Tahje Browne has been fined $8,000.
Kishroy Harry, a 24-year-old Vincentian national, was sentenced by Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel after earlier admitting to dangerous driving, driving without a valid driver’s licence, driving without the owner’s consent and driving without insurance. The offences stemmed from a collision on Sir Sydney Walling Highway on June 20th.
In determining the sentence, the court considered aggravating factors, including Harry’s decision to flee the scene and the seriousness of Browne’s injuries. Mitigating factors included his previous good character, expressions of remorse and his guilty plea.
Harry was fined $2,000 on each of the four charges, with the sentences to run concurrently. He has five months to pay the fines or face two months’ imprisonment in default on each count.
The court declined to award compensation, ruling that any claim for damages should be pursued through the High Court.
Reports indicate Browne suffered serious injuries after being struck while cycling. Harry fled the scene without stopping to render assistance. He was arrested the following day after attempting to leave the country for St Vincent.
