The body of an elderly man has been recovered from the McKinnons Salt Pond, north of the Mystic Beach Bar with authorities now investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
Investigation Mounted Into Body
Reports indicate that around 5:45 p.m. on Friday, officers from the Criminal Investigations Department, along with members of the Serious Crimes Unit and the Forensic Evidence Recovery Unit, responded to a report of a body seen floating in the pond. Upon arrival, investigators allegedly observed the lifeless body of a male floating on his back in the shallow end of the water.
Sources said that the deceased was 75 years old and resided in the Villa area. Further, he was last seen walking along Runaway Beach Road sometime during the day on Tuesday, 12th May.
Personnel from the St. John’s Fire Station were summoned and assisted in removing the body from the water. A medical doctor subsequently visited the scene and pronounced the man dead at 7:06 p.m.
The Police Administration has extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Investigations remain ongoing.
