Parham Waspa Williams Says
Former national and Parham FC striker, Daston “Waspa” Williams, said his greatest joy as a player came from representing club and country.
Williams, who now resides in French St. Martin, was a regular starter for Parham in the late ‘80s to mid ‘90s while also making several appearances for the senior men’s team.
Speaking on the Good Morning Jojo Sport Show, Williams revealed he was always passionate about the game no matter the level but was especially committed to his national duties.
“It was a joyous occasion. It was just unreal and I was really happy and I was ecstatic. It was like I was over the moon representing my nation, my country; there’s nothing better than that. When I go out, I put out my all. Whatever club or country is my all I’m trying to put out,” he said.
Pointing to Parham’s first Premier Division championship back in 1989/90 as his most rewarding moment as a club player, Williams believes that as a country, Antigua and Barbuda has loss its passion for the game.
“It’s sad. The game has deteriorated immensely over the period of time – really drastically – and it’s heart-wrenching to see where we’ve come. To say the least, is that our youngsters nowadays seem not to be too interested in the sport anymore. They don’t pay much mind to it. There are other things that take up their interest, you know,” the former player said.
Williams was the mainstay in the Parham squad during his tenure with the club, playing alongside the likes of Eustace “Barba” Ferrance, Daryll “Dad-I” Greenaway, Ian “Trini” Thorne and others.
