Vows Worker – By Deslyn A Joseph

Vows Worker Resurgence Liveable

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has promised the nation’s workforce a new era of empowerment, workplace safety, and economic dignity, labeling his administration’s new term as a “renaissance” for the working class.

Addressing a joint rally of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) on Monday, the Prime Minister emphasized that his government’s policies remain rooted in a deep empathy for the people, noting that his leadership team are all “products of the working class.”

Browne announced a significant shift in national economic policy, moving beyond basic minimums to ensure all workers can meet their cost of living. The administration is officially transitioning from a minimum wage to a livable wage model, with a pledge to continue increasing salaries routinely. Browne issued a stern call to the private sector, particularly the hotel industry, to share profits more equitably, asserting that workers are the most significant stakeholders in any business and must not be left to struggle while the industry thrives.

Acknowledging existing gaps in current workplace environments, the Prime Minister pledged immediate action to modernize and sanitize public facilities. This includes ramping up employment at Public Works specifically to maintain public buildings and provide a safe and pristine environment for employees. He also reaffirmed that the country’s infrastructural development will continue unabated until every road in the nation is fixed, describing the workers as the “bedrock” and “architects” of this progress.

In a direct address to management within both the private and public sectors, Browne demanded absolute respect for the Antiguan and Barbudan workforce. He warned foreign managers that disrespecting local workers would result in deportation, emphasizing that the days of such style management are long over. He also directed senior public servants to finalize documentation for workers affected by previous COVID-19 vaccine mandates, stating clearly that the money is in the Treasury and all back pay must be processed.

To ensure no one is left behind, the Prime Minister highlighted an opportunity ecosystem designed to move citizens into the middle class. This includes the Second Chance Program, among others, with the ultimate goal that every Antiguan and Barbudan adult must hold either a university degree or a certified trade. Browne also focused on youth empowerment, promising the younger generation a seat at the table on state boards and in Parliament, while making land available at $3 per square foot to facilitate local ownership of homes and businesses.

Closing the rally, Prime Minister Browne called for national unity and a culture of continuous self-development. He urged workers to increase their productivity to sustain the country’s economic trajectory, promising that his administration’s word is its bond. He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the masses, stating that the “unity of labour is the salvation of our country” and pledging to fight for the dignity of every worker, from sanitation staff to senior professionals.
