Police Investigate Prisoner Death
Thirty-six-year-old Rashawn Shabazz died at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre following the incident.
According to a police media release, preliminary investigations indicate Shabazz became aggressive and barricaded himself inside his cell after prison officers attempted to escort him for a scheduled medical assessment.
The police said prison officers made several attempts to resolve the situation peacefully before requesting police assistance.
According to the police, Shabazz continued to resist and threaten officers, resulting in the use of non-lethal measures to remove him safely from the cell.
The lawmen said he was then transported to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre where medical personnel attended to him. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:37 a.m.
The police administration has extended condolences to Shabazz’s family as a full inquiry into the incident is underway.
Separately, Shabazz’s father, Khalid Shabazz, publicly called for justice on social media, alleging that authorities had failed for years to provide appropriate treatment for his son’s reported mental illness. He also questioned the circumstances surrounding his son’s death.
